Director charged with £1.5m fraud

A COMPANY director has been charged with fraudulently obtaining around £1.5 million from his business.

Gerald Roger Alun Smith (56), originally of Windsor, appeared in the Magistrate’s Court this morning.

Smith, who did not enter any pleas, faces 14 charges of fraudulently converting property to his own use or benefit which belonged to Clearwater International Ltd while a director dating back to between 20 March 1995 and 31 August 2001.

He also faces a charge of fraudulently converting £105,000 belonging to the Chilcott Family Settlement, a trust for the benefit of Paul Chilcott and his family, on 6 March 1996.

Assistant Magistrate Ian Christmas told the defendant: ‘This case is not suitable for the Magistrate’s Court and in due course it will have to be committed to the Royal Court.

At the moment you would be advised to seek legal advice.’Smith was released on bail until 18 February, when he is expected to enter pleas.

He was ordered to surrender his passport, not to leave the Island, report weekly to the police station and reside at Silkworth Lodge, Vauxhal.
