Pool:Snell crowned CI champion

THE 2004 Channel Islands Closed Pool champion is 19-year-old Dave Snell who played exceptionally well to beat his more experienced Jersey team mate Lee Ruderham by five frames to three at the Mayfair Hotel on Saturday.

Snell won the first frame, then Ruderham, drawing on his considerable experience, took the next three in succession.Snell, however, kept a cool head and came straight back, winning the next three for the championship.’Lee went 3-1 up, then he made just one mistake in the next two and I just cleared up to make it three-all, then took the last frame.

I have to admit I’m pretty chuffed to have beaten Lee.’Snell was introduced to the game by his father, Peter, who also played for the Jersey team.Dave Snell is no stranger to major competition, having come up through the ranks and competed in three European and three World championships at junior level, but he played ‘out of his skin’ in this match in what is his second season at senior level, according to championship organiser Paul Bolton.’Dave and Lee know each other’s games well and they are friends and team mates, but Dave played a blinder to beat him,’ Bolton said.Having celebrated his win on Saturday night, Snell is now preparing himself for the professional competition tonight, having gained entry through his championship win.
