5% goods tax will hit mail order and online purchases

THE proposed new goods and services tax will be applied to products bought over the internet and through mail order.

Finance and Economics say that they will not allow Islanders to get around the new 5% tax simply by shopping online.

They also intend to impose it on goods brought back from trips to France and England. However, they admit that they have not yet worked out how they would police it.At the first of Finance’s consultation meetings last night president Senator Terry Le Sueur said that the committee had already considered the likelihood that people would seek to avoid the tax by ordering goods from outside the Island.
