Young people on 24-hour fast

AROUND 30 young people in Jersey will go without food for 24 hours this weekend.

The children are taking part in a famine to raise money for people who have no access to clean and safe drinking water. The event is being organised by St Martin’s Methodist Church and St Helier Methodist Centre and is in its second year.

It is part of a nationwide scheme by the Christian-based organisation, World Vision.Sunday school superintendent at St Martin’s Methodist Church Tim du Feu said: ‘The famine is about young people standing up and saying they care about people in countries that are less privileged than Jersey.

The famine lets the children experience the daily plight faced by millions of people and is a means to generate awareness and offer help.’The youngsters are all aged between 11 and 16 years and are members of the youth church.

They will start their fast with a ‘last supper’ at Pizza Hut at midday on Saturday and finish with a meal prepared by the church congregation on Sunday, again at midday.Last year the youngsters raised over £1,300 by taking part in the famine.

They are looking to beat that figure this time round.
