Football:Trinity close gap on leaders Scottish

CHAMPIONS Trinity maintained their flybe.

Combination Division I title challenge with a 1-0 home victory against First Tower United on Saturday.

Tower defender Peter Gough got the final touch on a Gerard Meadows shot to separate the teams, the only goal coming minutes after the interval following a free kick. The win lifts Trinity, who have a game in hand, to within three points of leaders Jersey Scottish, with the title-challengers still having to meet for league points a second time at Springfield next month.Trinity manager Joe Morley said: ‘We got the three points and that was the important thing.

We came through okay in the end and full credit to Tower they worked hard and made things difficult for us.”We were a bit ring-rusty as it was our first game in a month, and because of the postponements for senior and junior Island games it was only our fifth match in three months!’Gerard had a great game and he capped it with the goal.

His work-rate was very good and he put in some decent crosses.

The ball was going in before the defender got to it so I’m giving the goal to Gerard.’Morley scotched rumours that influential midfielder Peter Edwards had left the Island.

‘Peter’s father has a broken shoulder and he is visiting him.

I expect him back in a couple of weeks,’ he said.Tower manager Dave Philpott said: ‘That’s twice we’ve lost 1-0 to Trinity, and each time I felt we deserved a point.

We created the best two chances to score but unfortunately we didn’t take them.

We defended well under pressure and we kept a good shape.

We still need three points from four games to be safe.

The sooner we get them the happier I will be.’Tower host relegation-threatened St Peter next Saturday while second-placed Trinity entertain third-placed Jersey Wanderers.
