THERE is no guarantee that the proposed sales tax will stay at five per cent if it is introduced.
It could be raised during any future Budget debate to assist increased States spending.
But Finance and Economics vice-president Senator Philip Ozouf, who is one of the politicians investigating the introduction of a sales tax, said that his committee would fight any proposed increases.’I cannot promise that any sales tax will stay at five per cent if it is introduced, but we don’t want it rising above that level.
We shall fight any suggestion that it should be increased,’ said Senator Ozouf.’But there is a danger that certain politicians who will oppose a sales tax in the first place will then start suggesting that it is increased to fund extra spending for their budgets.’
