Football:Trinity smash title rivals for seven

CHAMPIONS Trinity turned in their best performance of the season on Saturday to brush aside Jersey Wanderers by seven goals to nil.

Trinity, who closed the gap to three points on Flybe.

Combination Division I leaders Jersey Scottish, turned the James Marquis Memorial Trophy race into a two-horse affair as they sent Wanderers crashing to only their second league defeat of the season.Playing at Les Quennevais, the game was switched to the venue because of snow on Trinity’s pitch at the Riley Field, Island striker Dave Le Roux helped himself to a hat-trick while there were singles from Steve Holt and Lee Jones and penalties by Darren Swanson and Paul Crompton.’We played brilliantly, it was by far our best performance of the season,’ said Trinity joint-manager Adam Reid.’Both teams were far from full strength but we acquitted ourselves better and we scored some fine goals.

We’ve been grinding out results of late but on Saturday our passing was brilliant and the running off the ball really good.’We’ve had a couple of meetings with the players recently because we’ve been stuttering a bit.

We’ve ironed a few things out and changed a couple of things at training and it has certainly paid off.’There’s a lot of points still to be played for in the title race and we’re still very much in contention.’St Paul’s and Rozel Rovers’ bid to reach the Jeremie Cup and WJ Collins Memorial Trophy finals respectively after both suffered 3-2 defeats after extra-time on Saturday.St Paul’s lost away to Guernsey Priaulx League leaders North while Rozel succumbed to Guernsey Rovers in a match switched to Les Quennevais because of snow lying on Rozel’s pitch at Le Couvent.St Paul’s joint-manager Bill Begbie said: ‘It’s disappointing to lose a semi-final but I’ve nothing but credit for the team.

They played really well and I was extremely proud of all of them.’North are having an excellent season and we stood up well and didn’t allow ourselves to get bullied.

They scored three good goals and while goalkeeper Danny Evans made some excellent saves for us we had chances to have won the game.’Right at the end of extra time Brett Pitman just couldn’t get a touch onto a cross and if he had we’d have gone to penalties.’
