News from the Jersey Evening Post

La Chaire garden project founders

THE controversial Château La Chaire garden restoration project has been all but scrapped.

The news comes following a decision by the trustees of the garden scheme to withdraw an application for a £1.6 million States grant to get the project off the drawing board. The historic garden featured recently in a BBC2 series entitled Hidden Gardens but there has been much opposition from residents of Rozel.

However, many connected to the tourism industry will be devastated. But Tourism Board chairman Deputy Lyndon Farnham has now ruled out any future grant from the Tourism Development Fund because the terms and conditions of an initial offer could not be met by the La Chaire sub-tropical garden trust.

There may still be a glimmer of hope for the garden if private funds can be found to pay for the £6m project but no government cash will be available.
