D-Day: Caen at heart of 60th anniversary

CAEN, the capital of Normandy, will be the centre in June of the 60th anniversary commemorations of the D-Day landings and this week Paul Séchaud, of the city’s museum, has been in the Island issuing details of the events involved.

Thousands of veterans and visitors are expected to pour into Normandy for the weekend of 5 and 6 June to pay homage to the Allied forces who fought and died to establish a foothold in Nazi-occupied Europe in 1944.Attention in Caen will be focused on Mémorial de Caen, the second-largest museum in France, which is dedicated to the history of the 20th century from the First World War to the Cold War.

On 5 June Prince Charles will attend the inauguration of a special British garden in the museum’s 85-acre park dedicated to freedom and co-operation between nations.
