Clergy unite over ‘two-tier society’

AN unprecedented open letter has been signed by Church leaders and clergy in St Helier claiming that there is still no equal society in Jersey because of the two-tier system of housing.

This, they say, prevents those without qualifications using their earned income to purchase a property of their own, which they say is a natural human right.

The letter is a response to the social issues and concerns raised by people who live in town, which have been among those raised in the ecumenical ‘Springboard’ project that has taken place throughout the past year.In a joint statement on behalf of all the town clergy, the Roman Catholic Dean in Jersey, Canon Nicholas France , and the vicar of St Paul’s Church, the Rev Paul Brooks, say: ‘The Churches have listened to a wide variety of people who are “”stakeholders”" in St Helier.

They have been inspired by what is being achieved.

Yet the Church leaders now respond to all they have heard, and in certain situations, seek to be the voice of the voiceless.’
