Youth crime: Surge in Town Hall inquiries

THE number of juveniles attending parish hall inquiries in St Helier last year increased by an ‘alarming’ 42 per cent, a report has revealed.

Of equal concern to the parish honorary police, who produced the report, is that a growing number of juveniles are alleged to have committed offences of a serious nature.Statistics released in the force’s annual report this week show that 334 juveniles appeared at inquiries at the Town Hall last year, compared to 236 in 2002.Young people attending public-order-related inquiries rose to 113, compared to 52 the previous year - an increase of 117 per cent.Those attending inquiries in relation to alleged assaults also increased, from 15 in 2002 to 40 last year - a massive 167 per cent rise.
