SEVERAL championship titles were decided in the seventh and final race of the Caesarean Cycling Club’s Trinity Tyres Winter Series, at Sorel Point last Sunday.
A field of 29 riders braved the cold but bright conditions on a muddy course that was hard going in places.
Robin Ovenden enjoyed a clear victory in the elite class - and had worked hard enough to relax a little as he cruised home to take the overall series title.
Kieron Mills rode strongly at the start and end to finish second, ahead of James Patterson in third.
All three had started the race level on points. In the Sports class there was yet another battle for the overall title, with Chris Stone evenutally pipping Jim Connolly for the honours - although it was the ever improving Jack Cunningham who won the race, finishing a good minute ahead of new champion Stone.Consistent riding from Mark Wanless secured third, with Connolly finally finishing fifth - enough to secure second place overall.
Christian Guégan was third overall.
The Veteran class saw some tactical riding, but with the overall title firmly in Bruce Dingle’s bag, it was really a race for second and third spot.
Having made his usual frantic start, Dingle was slowly reeled in by Ian Cabot and Dave Bihet.
They rode as a trio for nearly six laps but a burst of speed from both Cabot and Bihet on the very last climb ended with Cabot securing his first victory in the class.
Bihet finished second with Dingle third. The Junior Class was won with some superb riding from Richard Tanguy, in this his first complete Winter series.Overall victory in the Schoolboys’ class had already been secured by an absent Scott Dingle and young Ryan Hidrio secured his second well deserved win of the series.
Rhys Hidrio rode strongly throughout to take second, while a determined Robert Coutanche finished third.Janet Gallichan, the lone female rider, is hoping for some more competitors in the Summer series.Colin Hidrio, Torty Hubert, Trevor Bertram and Gordon Wright helped support a superb series.
