THIS year’s Woman in the Community award has gone to Jeannine Carey in recognition of her work for the Jersey Sports Association for the Disabled.
The announcement by the professional and business women’s organisation Soroptimist International of Jersey has been made to mark International Women’s Day.
Mrs Carey has worked for the sports association since 1992 and has been vice-chairman for the past ten years.
The association provides opportunities for people with learning disabilities to participate in sporting activities.An assistant manager at Standard Bank, Mrs Carey has done youth work in her spare time for the past 25 years, but said that when she started working with children with special needs she found something she really enjoyed.She said: ‘It is very rewarding.
When you see the smiles on the children’s faces when they score a basket and they have been trying for weeks it is so special.’The other nominees were:Pat Blaby - ‘Guardian angel’ to an elderly lady.Pauline Bridgwater - Assistant to elderly residents at Osborne Court.Edith Franklin - Longevity of service in the community through CAB, the Samaritans, Jersey Cancer Relief and many other associations.Liz Measures - Cancer Relief fund-raiser, supporter of St Clement Battle of Flowers Association and blood donor.Angie Nicholson - Work with young people with learning difficulties and disabilities.Carmel Nurse - Service on the Jersey Island Federation of Women’s Institutes.Sister Pascaline - Work for the elderly and sick at the Jeanne Jugan Residence.Julie Shaw - More than 25 years service on the Multiple Sclerosis committee.Pat Robson and Elizabeth Le Gal - Founders of the Art in the Frame Foundation, which promotes the work of artists and craft workers,Jane Werrin - Work raising funds for Jersey Hospice Care,
