THE consumption of alcohol in Jersey remains seriously high and much more excessive than in the UK.
Statistics produced by the Jersey Statistics Department from data on alcohol duty levels from Customs show that during 2000 and 2001 beer consumption in Jersey was about 40 per cent higher than in the United Kingdom.
Spirit consumption was about 20 per cent up and wine consumption almost two and a half times more.Compared to France, Jersey drank three and a half times more beer, while spirit and wine consumption was 25 per cent less.Figures for alcohol consumption per capita (age 15-plus) in 2001 taken from other data sources were recorded as 15.8 litres per year in Jersey, 9.8 in the United Kingdom and 13.4 in France.
