Chef de police: Backing sought

THE Constable of St Helier has asked the Royal Court to back his refusal to appoint the parish’s longest-serving Centenier as chef de police.

Simon Crowcroft does not want to appoint Centenier Christopher Gray to the post, although he has declined to say why.He has now taken a representation to the Royal Court seeking permission to ‘depart from the custom of appointing the Centenier with the longest record of honorary service’.The representation reads: ‘I wish to do this because I do not believe that the person who must bear the important and onerous responsibilities of Chef de Police should be selected on grounds of seniority alone and that I should be allowed some discretion in the matter of to whom I delegate duties for which I will remain responsible, according to my oath of office.’The case has been adjourned and both Centenier Gray and Attorney General William Bailhache have been asked to appear in the Royal Court on 23 March.
