Professional jockey remembers his first century

THIRTY-SIX years ago this week Jerseyman Ron Vibert rode his 100th winner as a professional jockey.

Still involved in the sport today, as a Jersey Race Club committee member and chairman of race planning, the 65-year-old St Ouennais remembers his ride well.’It was a milestone in my career and I remember the race,’ said Vibert whose 100th success was astride Prince Gin over two-and-a-half miles at Warwick.’Prince Gin was a tough old horse and although I’d had a fair bit of success with him before, that day the ground was firm and he didn’t like the going.

But we got through in the end.’The former jockey rode 13 winners as an amateur, finishing third in the amateur table in his first first season, while 18 months later he turned pro before finishing his career with around 120 to 130 winners.
