States to pick up welfare burden?

THE States will pay for parish welfare - and in return ratepayers from across Jersey will meet the costs of all road maintenance - if radical proposals lodged today are approved by politicians.

The cost of ‘native’ welfare and residential care currently met from parish budgets will come from States revenues from May 2006 if the proposals are adopted.

However, in return ratepayers will have to meet the cost of all main road maintenance in future.

This includes anti-skid surfacing work, repairs to potholes, maintaining surface water systems and all cleaning.

They will also pay for road signs and markings, lighting, traffic lights and crossings.Ratepayers can also expect two bills as a new domestic Islandwide services rate will be levied to meet the new costs.
