JERSEY needs to stop stifling business with government red tape if the economy is to move forward and diversify, says the president of the Economic Development Committee.
Deputy Gerald Voisin says that although things are changing, policies such as the Regulation of Undertakings continue to stand in the way of enterprise.Commenting in the annual JEP Business Review supplement, published with today’s edition, Deputy Voisin says his committee has a role to play in breaking down barriers to enterprise.
He says it has been ‘frustrating’ to work against a background of policies which are unfavourable to business development.’There is a lot of truth in the idea that Jersey stifles small business initiative,’ he said.
‘What we really must do is spur entrepreneurial drive and encourage diversity - especially in the light of the likely changes in the way we handle the migration problem.’In a nutshell, we have to liberalise.
If an idea is working, let people get on with it.
There is always the danger of unintended consequences if there is too much intervention.’Business Review is also published online at www.thisisjersey.com
