Cross country:Youngsters earn their Island call-up

THE second of this year’s Alexander Forbes junior cross country race series took place on Saturday afternoon at Le Braye with many of the 55 runners hoping for selection for this weekend’s inter-insular.

In the 7/8-year-olds’ race, over a shortened one-lap course at the base of the dunes, Hannah Jauncey ran extremely well, finishing ahead of nearest rival Anna Fenton by eight seconds. In the boys’ race only eight seconds separated the first seven finishers with William Humphrey finishing just a second ahead of Charlie Griggs, and Robbie Stenhouse third, two seconds adrift.

The 9/10 age group also produced some exciting racing and again the competition was tough.

The course this time was a longer single lap, and in the girls’ race Nicola Milner, though competing in the 11/12 year age group, joined the 9/10-year-old girls and ran strongly, leading the field much of the way.

A previous series winner, although the sole entry in the older girls age group, her win was still hard-earned.

Hot on her heels and winner of the 9/10- year-old girls was Felicity Johnson-Deely with Robyn Edwards runner-up, just five seconds behind. There was disappointment for the winner of the previous race, Rebecca Houzé.

She is running well at the moment, but had to retire because of a bad cold.

All four will form part of a young U13 team in the inter-insular at Noirmont. The 9/10-year-old boys’ race was also extremely close - this time four seconds separated the first four runners.

Wade Le Marquand won to make it two out of two in the series.

He will be one of the youngest members of the Jersey team against Guernsey.

Luke Walker was second, third was Robert Wilkinson and Jonathon Tipping was fourth. The final race featured the hard-training Toby Edwards, the only 13/14 boys group runner, leading a field of 11/12-year-olds around two laps of the larger loop.

It was a close-fought battle in the younger group, with Ben Crossman beating Piers Wilson by a good two seconds.
