JERSEY is to become a Fairtrade Island following yesterday’s States endorsement of a proposition to lend their support to ethical trade with the Third World.
Senator Jean le Maistre’s proposition to ask the States to lead by example was approved by 46 votes to three.Senator Le Maistre said he was delighted with the result.’I was appreciative of the Members who spoke in favour and the Dean, whose comments were very important,’ he said.However, the House was not unanimous in its endorsement.
Deputies Guy de Faye and Sarah Ferguson voted against and some supportive Members were not entirely convinced of the merits of Fairtrade.
