Island joins in as cigarettes feel the heat on National No Smoking Day

THE increase in cigarette prices and the States’ approval of the Tobacco Strategy recommending the banning of smoking in eating places is an ideal time to quit the habit, say Jersey ASH.

Against a background of 200 people a year in Jersey dying from smoking, the group are encouraging those who ‘want out’ to begin the challenge today.’Smokers Who Want Out’ is the theme of this year’s campaign, and Jersey ASH (Action on Smoking and Health) chairman Connie Le Sueur said that many smokers not only wanted ‘out’ of health problems but also spending so much money, being addicted and feeling disgusted by their smoking.

Health promotion officer Yvonne Judge said that giving up was not easy for anyone.

‘It’s an addiction, so planning, encouragement, support and motivation are all needed to make becoming smoke-free a success,’ she said.Mrs Judge is available on 716017.

The Jersey Smoker’s Quitline is 0800 735 1155.
