JERSEYMAN John Liron was in fine form in the French National Short-Course Masters Swimming Championships, held in Istras, southern France, last weekend.
The former firefighter, who is now living in Brittany, won three gold medals in 55-59-year-old age group.His time of 34.03 seconds in the 50m breast-stroke was a British and European record while his 50m freestyle dash of 27.10 lowered the British record by one-tenth of a second.Liron, who is sponsored by Moore Stephens, also won the 100m breast-stroke in a time of 1 minute 23.1 seconds.’The swims have given me a real boost for the World Championships which will be held in Italy in June,’ said Liron.’I really didn’t expect to do as well because I’ve been plagued with influenza for a couple of weeks.’Liron, who was representing Dinan, was one of 12,000 swimmers representing 45 clubs at the gala.
