Netball:Champs given a tough time

ST Clement, the Division I champions, continued their winning ways last night, in the JNA Deutsche Bank Offshore winter netball league match against third-placed St Brelade A - but although they finished 11 goals ahead, the score was not an accuracte reflection of the game.

St Clement A 37, St Brelade A 26: St Clement took the lead early on and went on to win the first quarter 7-4.

Without their usual line-up, Tanya Olver was wearing the wing-attack bib and had a superb game; working the attacking third tirelessly, even though she has only recently returned to the game after a long absence.St Brelade were also missing key players from their squad, but despite Nina Quinn’s absence due to injury, goalkeeper Faith Shalomon and defence, Sue Dougherty, were inspirational and combined well to keep the attack out.Their defence, and the first-class shooting of Caroline Avery, meant they had closed the gap to 15-13 at half ime.Despite the cold - temperatures were just above freezing - Zoe Hewlett, up from the St Clement B side, had an excellent game with her strong defensive play and vital interceptions a telling factor. The competitiveness from both teams showed as the third quarter progressed, St Brelade drawing level on more than one occasion. But they let their guard drop briefly, and that allowed the easterners to creat a four-goal cushion, 26-22.Then, for the last 15 minutes of the game, St Clement took charge and anticipated play, with the whole team pulling together.Centre Carol McKeon provided vital link-ups with GD Sara Bisson and GA Shelby Wright, and they finished with comfortable win.Umpires: Paul Adamson and Aileen BinnieOther results: Division Ib: St Ouen A 51, St Lawrence B 31; Division II: Academicals B 28, St Ouen B 49; Division III: St Clement D 13, Convent E 59.
