Six of the best up for Sid Guy Award

THERE are six strong candidates for the annual Sid Guy Memorial Trophy, which will be presented as part of the Jersey Sports Council’s new-look awards night later this month.

The criterion for the award is service to sport over a long period, with that service to have been highlighted by dedication or a strong contribution to development, administration or management.

That has most certainly been the case with the six nominees, four women and two men.Mary Asbury recently retired from the Sports Council after giving stirling service, has played major roles in Island netball and was team manager of Jersey’s Island Games team in 1987.

Eileen Vowden is another strong candidate from netball and has also led the Jersey team to the Island Games, in 2001 and 2003.International volleyball referee and administrator Denis Le Breuillywas a founder member of the Jersey Volleyball Association back in the 1970s, is nominated for his dedication to the sport.Jean Lowery is heavily involved in bowls administration ranging from club to world level - while still managing to compete at a high level.Annette Langley, a former president of the Jersey Motor Cycle and Light Car Club, has been nominated for her behind the scenes work in motor sport on the Island.Geoff Reed, the holder of a golden liftetime certificate from table tennis, began his involvment with the sport in Jersey in 1949 and has rarely been off the scene since, being involved as a player, coach, administrator.All the cadidates will be profiled in the run-up to the awards evening, which this year is sponsored by Highland Spring Mineral Water, on Friday, 26 March.

Also to be announced at the dinner will be the Sports Personality of the Year, Team of the Year and a new award for achievment in sport for the disabled.
