HOUSES at Le Marais and Le Squez estates will be sold to tenants to fund refurbishment works.
The States agreed yesterday to back the Housing Committee in selling off 215 houses over ten years in order to raise around £48 million for refurbishing the estates.Housing told Members that the estates were becoming like a ghetto, and that unless refurbishment works were carried out soon, parts of them would become uninhabitable. They said there was no chance of securing the necessary funds through the capital programme because of the current financial constraints.
It is the first time properties have been sold to fund refurbishment works in this way.Although some States Members accused Housing of trying to sell ‘the family silver’, the proposal was carried by 36 votes to 13.
