Tennis:Scott goes so close

Scott Clayton reached the final of the Surrey County ten-years-and-under matchplay recently, and was only denied victory by the No 1 seed.

A part of the LTA’s indoor winter series, the event involved 16 U10 boys.A member of the Ashburton Performance programme at the Caesarean Tennis Club, he played his first match against a Wiltshire lad and won 7-5, 6-3.His second victory was more emphatic, a 6-1, 6-3 win, and in the semi-finals he beat Ryan Frankel of Dorset, 6-4, 6-1.Up against Jack Pewter in the final, the Jersey lad battled well, and although he eventually went down 6-3, 6-1, each point was hard-fought and many games went to deuce.Coach Pablo Giacopelli was very pleased with his charge’s performance: ‘This was his first event in the last four months as he has been working on some changes in his game.

Surrey is arguably one of the best tennis counties in the UK and he met some high-level opponents.’The youngster was then able to make the most of a link between the Caesarean and the University of Bath, and he joined a performance squad at the university for two days.Run by Simon Jones, he was able to make the most of the opportunity to play against high-level players.
