Women’s football: St Peter a point off championship

CHAMPIONS St Peter moved to within one point of retaining the flybe.

Combination ladies’ divisional championship after defeating Rozel Rovers 7-1 at Le Couvent on Sunday.

There were wins for First Tower, St John and Jersey Wanderers in other matches.Rozel Rovers 1, St Peter 7: The Saints were gifted the lead when a Rozel defender scored an own goal.

The champions-elect continued to exert the pressure and they doubled their advantage following Sarah Gavey’s weaving run.Jo Fuller made it 3-0 with a dipping shot but shortly after the interval a revitalised Rozel pulled a goal back through Sue Davison.The set-back stung St Peter into action and Fuller went on to complete a hat-trick.

Michaela Dawson was also on target together with Karen Caygill, the latter with a well-directed header.Grouville 0, First Tower 14: Tower were comfortable winners again Grouville, the latter fielding ten due to injuries and illness.

Tower stroked the ball around well and goalkeeper Anne Prosser was busy throughout, making several fine saves for Grouville.Kerry Sauvage scored six goals and Danielle Evans two.

Singles were added by Diana dos Santos, Eve Watson, Michelle Bichard, Katie Warren and Serena Guthrie, together with an own goal.St Brelade 1, Jersey Wanderers 3: Despite playing two short, St Brelade made Wanderers work hard for their victory.

With improved defending they thwarted Wanderers’ early attempts and they took the lead when Susan Stewart raced through to score following a fine run from the half-way line.As St Brelade attempted to push forward they left gaps at the back and Pauline Smart exploited one to nip in and equalise.Wanderers’ pressure increased, and before the break Caroline Quénault put them ahead following a shot through a crowded St Brelade penalty area.The hosts, who were served well by Claire White and Naomi Gibaut, continued to work hard, but they were unable to stop Helen Durkin’s 20-yard shot making it 3-1.St Clement 0, St John 1: Both teams started well as they battled to secure fourth place in the table.

With St John playing the better football and Jess Vieira teasing St Clement’s defence with several surging runs and crosses, St Clement held their opponents at bay with strong performances from defenders Rachel Gleeson, Sinead Mitchell and Aisling Farrell.The home side blocked out the pressure well but a good ball through their defence let in Laura Robertson to calmly score the game’s only goal low into a corner.St John continued to have the slight edge but they were denied further goals by a fine display from stand-in goalkeeper Tara Marie.St Clement, well served by Lisa Feighan in midfield, pressed hard for an equaliser but they were repeatedly denied by some solid defending from Sam Dixon, Helen Warren and Jane Gallichan-Todd.
