Ramsar reefs make France backpedal on wind farm

THE proposed Ramsar designation of Jersey’s offshore reefs has made the French power generating authorities rethink plans for a wind farm off the Ecréhous.

Deputy Mike Taylor said that the French were now considering a site further east of the reef, closer to Carteret.

However, he added, there were still serious implications for interference with the Airport’s radar system, the Jersey and French fishing industries and migratory birds. The original plans were for about 40 windmill masts, 165 ft high with a diameter of 200 feet, to the north of the Ecréhous.

Deputy Taylor said that Jersey would have to keep monitoring the situation as the French were committed to generating a sizeable proportion of their power by harnessing natural energy.
