Historic win for hosts of Festival of Sport

ST Michael’s School are celebrating their 25th annual Festival of Sport - and they have marked the occasion by winning the boy’s hockey tournament for the first time.

Matches were played yesterday afternoon, with two tournaments running simultaneously, and St Michael’s A team eventually beat their UK namesakes 1-0 in the final, in what was a fairly tense encounter. The tournaments produced some terrific hockey, with accuracy, clever tactics and deft stick work from some promising young players.Held at Fort Regent, it involved teams from St Michael’s Prep, Victoria College, and several of the visiting schools from England.St Michael’s A and B sides met in the quarter-finals, for the second successive year, and the As progressed to the next round by beating the Bs 2-0.

Parkside A, from the UK, likewise beat their B side, 1-0, while Victoria College went out on sudden death penalty strokes against visiting Westbourne House in a repeat of last year’s final.Belmont House, also visitors, suffered the same fate, being knocked out by St Michael’s (UK).The first semi-final saw the hosts beat Parkside A (UK) by a single goal while the other was between St Michael’s (UK) and Westbourne (UK).

This was an extraordinarily close match, decided eventually on penalty strokes, of which there were 12.In the girls’ event, for the Allen Plate, Prior Park (UK) ran out eventual winners after they beat Stoner (UK).

The hosts finished third after they beat Durlston Court (UK).
