Star Trophy squad hit for six by Southampton

JERSEY’S Under-15 Star Trophy footballers were beaten 6-2 by Southampton Schools in their second and final match on tour to the Southampton area on Saturday.

Paul Dicker’s squad were a goal down in nine seconds and three behind after 14 minutes.

Trailing 4-0 at the break Jersey recovered to share four goals with their hosts in the second half.Dicker, whose team beat Redbridge Community School 5-1 on Friday, said: ‘It was an extremely embarrassing performance.

First half we lacked cohesion, we allowed Southampton to play and we stood off against a strong and physical side and they took full advantage.’My players had a good talking to at the break and, full credit to them, they responded to play much better in the second half.

We looked tired after Friday’s game and if we start slowly against Guernsey next weekend then we will give ourselves a mountain to climb.’Scott Slicer scored Jersey’s first goal from a header while David Kenyon grabbed the second from the penalty spot.

Kenyon’s kick was pushed onto a post by the goalkeeper only for Kenyon to score from the rebound.Ben Cairney and Paul Dingle picked up injuries over the weekend while Dicker has added Kyle Hampshire to his squad for Saturday’s match at Springfield against Guernsey.Jersey’s tour ended on a high last night as the players bumped into Liverpool’s Premiership squad returning from their match against Southampton.

Jersey players, who watched the Saints’ 2-0 win at St Mary’s Stadium, had photographs taken with many of the Liverpool squad and their players signed a host of autographs.
