A FORMER heroin addict who was sentenced to four years in prison yesterday has said that she intends to make the most of her time spent there.
Twenty-four-year-old Gracie Austria George has already come off the drug, while in prison on remand, and plans to study for a degree.George was caught in December bringing heroin with a street value of up to £37,000 into the Island in return for some free heroin and £1,000.She said she missed several planes to the Island before withdrawal symptoms got the better of her and she travelled to Jersey from London City airport on 23 January with 84 gm of heroin concealed internally.George sat in tears as her parents witnessed her sentence being read out by the Deputy Bailiff, Michael Birt.
Defending, Advocate Caitriona Fogarty, said that her client, who was born in the Philippines and had started taking heroin in 1999, was ‘extremely remorseful’ for her actions.
She said: ‘She realises how lucky she is to have been arrested at this stage.
She is now free from heroin and very well aware that if she had not been intercepted, she would not have had much of a life ahead of her.’The Deputy Bailiff was sitting with Jurats Quérée, Le Brocq, Bullen, Le Breton, King and Le Cornu.
