A STRATEGY to make the Island safer was overwhelmingly approved by the States yesterday.
Members voted by 43 to two in favour of adopting the ‘Building a Safer Society’ strategy presented by Home Affairs president Senator Wendy Kinnard. The Senator said that the priorities were to create a safer environment by reducing crime, public disorder and antisocial behaviour; to provide people with opportunities to develop their potential and become active and responsible members of society; and to reduce the harm caused by the misuse of drugs, alcohol and solvents. The debate lasted just short of three and a half hours, and there was a sense of urgency because funding of the new policy needs to be debated at the next phase of the fundamental spending review process that starts today. The proposals included just short of £1m per year to finance a variety of initiatives included within them.
The remainder will come from the budgets of Home Affairs, Health and Social Services and a number of other committees.Deputy Jerry Dorey attacked the fundamental principles of policies adopted in the western world to tackle the international drugs problem.
