Police issue safety advice in wake of nurse’s murder

POLICE issued advice on personal safety today following the murder of nursery nurse Tracy Burns.

Crime reduction officer Bruce Liron said Islanders could learn from the weekend’s tragedy, but stressed that such incidents were thankfully very, very rare.’There are things people can do so that we can perhaps take something positive from this,’ he said.

‘I think friends play an important part and can make sure people get into a taxi or to their front door.

People should not walk home alone and should try to stay on well-lit, busy routes and face the oncoming traffic.

Make sure you have your keys ready so you are not fumbling around in your bag when you get to the front door.’Det con Liron said that rape alarms were on sale at the discounted price of £5 from all parish halls.’Before Christmas, we had a case of a lady walking home in St Brelade who was carrying a personal attack alarm,’ he said.

‘She was approached by a man and she managed to activate the alarm.

The man ran off and someone came out of a nearby hotel to help.

It did what it was supposed to do.’He added that it was also a good idea to text the registration or number of a taxi to a friend to guard against being picked up by bogus drivers.’We have had cases of people getting into cars thinking they were taxis and being assaulted by men posing as taxi drivers,’ said Dc Liron.Anyone who wants to speak to the crime reduction team can call 612345.

Dc Liron also recommended visiting www.suzylamplugh.org on the internet for personal safety advice.
