THIRTEEN workers being made redundant by Jacksons Garages face a bleak future as they say there are no jobs left in car bodywork repair in Jersey.
And many of the men have blamed the Jacksons Group’s multi-millionaire owner Tom Scott for their plight. The men were told on Tuesday morning they would be out of work from 23 April.
However, Jacksons have told them not to accept any more work and also not to recommend any competitors if clients ask where they should go.Between them the workers say they have about 400 years’ experience in their field and two of the men being made redundant have worked for the company and its predecessors for 40 years or more.
They say they are not being offered any more money than the minimum terms in law, so the maximum redundancy payment will be 16 weeks for the longest-serving employees.
They also say they have not been offered counselling or redeployment advice by the garage’s management. The men are based at Jacksons’ Rue des Prés premises and cannot fully understand why they are being made redundant.
They say they have had plenty of work and the bodyshop has been busy.
