JERSEY Zoo founder and wildlife conservation visionary Gerald Durrell has been voted South West Hero by BBC Television viewers from that region.
Beating 41 other contenders for the title from all over the South West, including the legendary King Arthur, and much-loved authors Thomas Hardy and Daphne du Maurier, Mr Durrell was announced as winner yesterday on the programme ‘South West Heroes’ screened at 1.25 pm.This morning, trust executive director Mark Stanley Price described the award for Mr Durrell as being ‘hugely important’ to the trust.’It is also an indication that nine years after his death the public recognises that the trust is still at the leading edge of conservation thinking and practice and the torch that Gerry lit still burns brightly both here and across the world,’ he said.
