Wheat prices push up the cost of a loaf

BREAD prices in the Island are to rise by six per cent.

the long hot summer, the price of wheat has soared across Europe after it was damaged by the record heat. Therefore bakeries are now feeling the consequences as wheat prices have risen around the continent.Warnings of a rise in the price of bread were announced by Channel Island Bakery in December, but at the time they would not be drawn on what the increases were likely to be.However, they now say the Island was facing a 20 per cent increase in price before Christmas, but ‘negotiations’ have limited the rise to six per cent.Lynda Silk, marketing manager, said: ‘This past year has certainly been difficult for the baking industry, but we are pleased to have some positive news for the Channel Islands.’
