1204 and all that

AN official history of the defining period in the formation of modern Jersey will be published in May.

Jersey 1204 - The Forging of an Island Community was commissioned by the States at a cost of £80,000.

It has been written by eminent Cambridge medieval historians Dr Judith Everard and Professor Sir James Holt.Together they have unearthed a wealth of historical detail and local colour to examine the events leading up to the momentous year 1204, when England lost Normandy, and the 50 turbulent years that followed.Complete with a forward by the Bailiff, Sir Philip Bailhache, this definitive official history provides an insight into the foundations of the Island’s unique constitutional links to the Crown and Jersey’s legal and political systems.Dr Everard is senior research associate to the British Academy-AHRB Acta of the Plantagenets research project at Cambridge and a fellow of Fitzwilliam College.

She has published books on the history of France and Britain in the central Middle Ages.
