THERE have been fresh calls for the Island to join the National Lottery.
They have come after Education, Sport and Culture announced that there would be no funding for sports clubs which wished to develop new facilities.Until now the committee has matched any investment on a pound-for-pound basis, but proposals on the table could see that stop by 2005.In response to the cutbacks, which could also see sports centres closing on bank holidays to save paying staff double time, Senator Mike Vibert thinks that money could become available from the National Lottery.
‘A great many Islanders now take part in the National Lottery despite the fact that we currently get nothing from it.
But we have been in contact with them,’ he said.’To be truthful, the Jersey Lottery has gone down from its heyday - it has suffered badly and is now about a tenth of what it used to be.
There is no reason why we couldn’t keep something like a Christmas draw, but, if we could subscribe to the National Lottery, we could generate money from it for community funding,’ Senator Vibert added.
