News from the Jersey Evening Post

Island to gain Polish twin?

JERSEY or St Helier will be twinned with a community in Poland if discussions this week between the Bailiff and the Polish Ambassador come to fruition.

The Polish Ambassador to the Court of St James, Dr Stanislaw Komorowski, who was on a brief visit to the Island - the first-ever to Jersey by a Polish ambassador - said that he was very much in favour of the idea.’Now it is a matter of finding a good partner,’ he said.

‘I shall work on this and shall come back with proposals.’This morning, in an interview with the JEP, he also said that no great change in the number of Polish people living in Jersey should be expected after 1 May when Poland accedes to the EU.Speaking about any change in numbers of Poles in the Island after 1 May, he said: ‘I do not expect a significant growth in numbers in the United Kingdom - or in Jersey.

Previous enlargements of the EU have had an opposite effect - for example many Portuguese people returned to Portugal from Britain after joining the EU.

In Jersey, you have certain needs for workers, and only certain numbers of them are sustainable.

No one would be willing to increase that number.’
