EAT Jersey Royals in spring, and it won’t be just the potatoes that will be in season: nine months later you may get a bonus you didn’t necessarily expect.
This was the message which may have surprised the UK news media yesterday, when newsrooms were told that a Jersey baby boom had been attributed to the aphrodisiacal effect of Jersey Royal potatoes. But not to worry folks, yesterday’s date had a lot to do with this press release, which was sent out by the new London-based public relations company, Cairns and Co, engaged by Jersey Marketing to ‘build the Jersey Royal brand as a vital defence against competition’.It is part of a promotional campaign with a £780,000 budget, interlinking the promotion of agriculture and tourism.
The campaign promotes the Jersey Royal as ‘the vintage of champagne of potatoes’ (no joke). The potato story the media and general public were invited to swallow yesterday was that ‘there’s something in the potatoes’ - officials in Jersey had discovered an annual baby boom linked to the Jersey Royals potato season.
