Motor racing: Formula for success?

JERSEY’S young motor racing sensation James Walker makes his Formula 3 debut tomorrow.

The former Victoria College pupil will be in the starting line up at Donington Park, in Leicestershire, in the first round of the Avon Tyres British Formula 3 championship.

Walker is confident about his future, but is not expecting too much from his first season.’This will be a learning year in anticipation of a championship challenge in 2005,’ Walker said.

‘Formula 3 cars are highly technical, with enormous aerodynamic grip and phenomenal brakes, both of which take time to get used to.

That will come with mileage.

This weekend will be about aiming for solid finishes to get the maximum mileage and become comfortable in a race situation.’It is likely to be an exciting year for the 20-year-old, who will race in Belgium, China and Korea as well as Britain.Formula 3 has long been seen as the stepping stone to Formula 1, and helped shoot superstars like Ayrton Senna and Mika Hakkinen to fame.

Last year, the Jersey youngster won the 2003 UK Formula Ford Scholarship series in only his second year of racing.

He has also secured the support of ex-Grand Prix driver Derek Warwick and has secured the backing of a consortium which includes major Jersey-based businesses CI Traders and Club Carrefour, as well as the UK-based Headley Stud.
