PETITIONS are being signed, letters sent out and a public meeting being organised over the proposed closure of Les Quennevais branch library.
The move would cut £130,000 off Education, Sport and Culture’s budget, but people in the west of the Island have been seriously upset by the proposal.Since Les Quennevais School was built 30 years ago the branch has also been the school library.
If the closure goes ahead, the school will be expected to man, run and stock it out of its current budget.
Head teacher John Thorp said that he found the decision surprising and thought that it would be a significant loss to the community.
In his latest brief-ing, which went out to parents yesterday, Mr Thorp said: ‘The branch library has made an important contribution to the west of the Island for many years - not just to the school itself, but particularly to the very young and the elderly.
‘In these days of the knowledge economy, and within an Island and Education Department where there is a stated commitment to lifelong learning, it seems an odd proposal to close a key resource in the interest of short-term economics.’
