PLANS for a general election and the severing of the link between parishes and Deputies are to go to the States before the summer.
The plans are for the role of Senators to be scrapped and for a general election for States Members to be put in place by 2008.Six ’super-constituencies’ would be established to replace the parishes as the electoral districts for Deputies, and a referendum would be put to the public on the proposed changes to the States. The decision to take the proposals to the States was made at a meeting of the special committee set up to handle the reform to the States Chamber.
Several members of the public and States Members attended the meeting and heard a divided special committee thrash out the proposals.
