News from the Jersey Evening Post

A proud ’small nation’

JERSEY’S degree of independence was emphasised by the Bailiff last night in a flag-waving speech marking the 1204-2004 anniversary.

The Channel Islands have become ’self-sufficient and resilient small nations’, Sir Philip Bailhache told a 300-strong audience at the city hall in Caen.

Sir Philip, who is heading a Royal Court delegation to Normandy to coincide with the 800th anniversary of the historical events which led to the Island’s special constitutional status, said that the development of the finance industry had given Jersey a place of its own on the modern international stage, where it was increasingly representing its own interests.

He also welcomed the strengthening of links with Normandy - of which the Channel Islands were once part, creating a common cultural and legal heritage - and said that more joint initiatives with Caen were being planned.
