Competition law debate as chairman steps down

THE face of business in Jersey could change significantly if the Economic Development Committee’s proposals for a Competition Law are approved by the States tomorrow.

The law, which is the first item set down on the agenda, seeks to put an end to restrictive monopolies and open the way for competitive commercial enterprise.

Ironically, on the same day that the landmark law is being debated, the body set up to police competition in the Island, the Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority, is undergoing a crisis of leadership.
