Cricket:Waters is seven-up

TEENAGER Jack Waters starred for champions Sporting Club on Saturday with a seven-wicket haul as the Weekend League Division I champions strolled to their sixth consecutive divisional win.

Coming on second change, after an injury to Steve Carlyon, the 19-year-old medium-pacer ripped the heart out of Romerils’ innings taking seven wickets for 12 runs in 7.2 overs at Grainville.

The feat helped Sporting Club reduce Romerils to 90 all out before Sporting Club reached their target in 19.5 overs.

Skipper Matt Hague supported Waters well with the ball, two wickets for 21 runs in ten overs, including three maidens, while with the bat Hague struck five boundaries in an undefeated 36.

Simon Short, who took three catches, was also unbeaten on 26.

Hague said: ‘Jack’s performance was fantastic, he just kept going and going.

Steve hurt his back and Jack came on a lot earlier than I was planning.

We were without Bradley Vowden, Trevor Rousseau, Mark Reynolds and Jason Carpenter and I had every confidence in Jack and he proved it.

‘He took a wicket in each of his first four overs and then two in the fifth.

He has been bowling really well of late and on Saturday his performance helped us win the match.’ OVs defeated Old Codgers by six wickets to remain in second place.

Andy Dewhurst, Bertie Broughton, Chris Jones and Chris Searson all took two wickets as Old Codgers were all out for 130.

Paul Marshallsay and Dewhurst steered OVs to victory in 31 overs, Marshallsay hitting eight 4s in an undefeated 63 while Dewhurst was out for 33 including four boundaries.

The pair put on a fourth-wicket partnership of 93.

The opening Minor Cup group matches for Division II clubs resulted in victories for Springfield and OVs Reserves, against St Brelade and St Ouen Res respectively.

Brothers Heath and Ian Kearns both hit scores in the 30s for St Brelade as they closed 35 overs for 158 - Tim Kearsey grabbing four wickets for 23 runs in his seven-over spell.

Channel Islands Over-50s players Paul Robson (36) and Greg Sykes (47) top-scored in Springfield’s reply and it was a close finish as St Brelade took eight wickets but they let themselves down by conceding 55 extras.

Daniel Lundy hit four 4s to top-score in ten-man Springfield’s 117-run win against nine-man St Ouen Reserves yesterday at FB1.
