Healthspan half marathon: Keen leads veterans home

JERSEY Spartan Athletic Club member Jerry Keen placed fourth overall and was first veteran in the Guernsey Healthspan half-marathon on Sunday.

He was one of several Jersey runners who took part in the event when it rained for probably the first time in its long history.

Keen completed the 13.1-miles in 1 hr 20 min 28 sec, ahead of fellow Spartan Mark Allen who was fifth in 1.21.07.

Other Jersey runners included: Dave O’Brien, 1.27.59; Bernie Arthur, 1.29.19; Fred Oyen and Sue Le Ruez, 1.37.43; Judith Russell, 1.46.54; Frale Oyen, 2.16.22.

Meanwhile, Spartan member Jayson Lee completed the Potteries marathon in Stoke on Trent on Sunday in 3 hr 8 min 41 sec.

Having been disappointed with his run in the London Marathon in April when he finished in 3.40, Lee decided to maintain his training to run the 26.2-mile distance again yesterday.

‘It was windy, raining and the course was hilly,’ he said this morning.

‘It’s not a course for a fast time - you can’t get into a steady rhythm because you’re going up and down all the time and at 23 miles you hit a hill like Queen’s Road.’ He was much happier with this run compared to the one in London, however, placing 20th overall and tenth senior man.
