VICTORIA College dominated the annual inter-collegiate match winning by six wickets at College Field against Guernsey’s Elizabeth College last Saturday.
Tom Minty won the toss and invited Elizabeth to bat.
Despite missing one or two catches and possible run outs, Victoria’s out cricket was aggressive and efficient.
Rohan Mohanty took three catches behind the stumps and supported his bowlers very well with a good display of wicketkeeping.
Simon Warren produce the early breakthrough and although Elizabeth’s James Warr scored steadily to make 73, Victoria’s bowlers were always on top operating with close fielders throughout.
Hamish Maclachlan, who bowled his off-breaks well in a spell of 21 overs to take three wickets, bowling in tandem with the promising Tom Wherry, who took two wickets in a spell of ten overs, enabled Victoria to take control of the match.
Tom Minty chipped in with two wickets and Warren again bowled too fast and too straight for the tailenders.
Chasing 182 to win in 47 overs, Victoria’s innings started brightly, Mohanty hitting two boundaries before he was bowled for 14.
Sam Dewhurst and Oliver Hughes constructed an excellent partnership of 86 with Hughes batting steadily and Dewhurst taking full advantage of some wayward bowling to hit 63 (seven 4s, one 6).
Minty joined Hughes and they continued to bat positively in a partnership of 51 before Hughes was caught behind for 44 (four 4s) with the score on 158.
Minty continued, hitting the ball very hard, to score an undefeated 51 (nine 4s, one 6) and see his team home in the 44th over - Maclachlan hitting the winning boundary with a straight drive.
This solid performance and comfortable victory will give the College side some confidence as they embark on a seven-match tour in the UK next week when they will play Bryanston, Wellington, King’s Worcester, Eastbourne and Reigate.
