THE Jersey Surfboard Club have announced that former Masters World Champion Gary ‘Kong’ Elkerton, will be attending this weekend’s Quiksilver Grommets Series event at the Watersplash, St Ouen’s Bay.
Elkerton will be joining surfing legends former World champion Jeff Hakman, and former four-time World champion Mark Richards at the competition, which promises to be the Island’s biggest junior event of the year.
Said contest director Colin Crowther: ‘Having these guys at the event is absolutely huge for surfing in Jersey and is brilliant promotion for the club.
To have three former world champs at one event is fantastic!’ Elkerton was unfortunately dubbed the best surfer never to have won a world title, having won more runners-up trophies than you can poke a stick at.
That all changed, however, when in 2000 and 2001 he won successive Masters Surfing Championships.
The renound party animal, “”Kong”", has also won more Quick Ups than anyone else to date.
There will be a number of free give-aways on the day, and the event will be followed by a BBQ at the Watersplash.
Entry to the competition is free, and all junior surfers are encouraged to take part, with registration taking place between 8.00 and 9.00 a.m.
