FOUR Jerseymen will represent the Island in the Highland Spring ‘HiHo’ windsurfing event to be staged in the British Virgin Islands from 26 June.
Ian Atkinson, Michael Millar, Rob McAllister and Alistair Varrie, who depart tomorrow, have a successful history together.
The quartet claimed gold in the 2003 Island Games, held in Guernsey.
McAllister also clinched gold in the individual event of the same games.
Varrie and McAllister have been performing well of late, with the former winning the ‘best tricks’ category in the third round of the JAWS Highland Spring Expression Session series held at Sands recently.
Team captain Atkinson, also President of JAWS, is bubbling with excitement in the build-up to the event.
Said Atkinson, ‘It’s the opportunity of a lifetime! We’ve all been training really hard and are much indebted to sponsors Highland Spring for giving us the chance to compete in an event such as this’.
The field ranges from relative novices to full professionals, including the world’s five top ranked windsurfers.
In the face of such strong competition, victory in this event could compare to Crewe Alexandra winning the FA Cup.
One thing, however, is certain.
With the personalities involved and the strong team spirit the quartet have mustered over recent years, the team are guaranteed to give 100 per cent.
